RAISING LEADERS
2 Timothy 2:2
What you heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will also be able to teach others.
The Who
Let’s remind ourselves what kind of leaders are we looking for.
F.A.S.T. LEADERS
The Vineyard encourages 4 important characteristics in all potential leaders.
From Launching Leaders:
Faithful. Do they follow through with their commitments? Is this someone you can count on? Is this person passionate about the same vision you care about?
Available. Time is a huge limiter to actually doing ministry. Do they have time to commit to leadership? There are many who have all the gifts, character, and calling to be leaders, but they don’t have the time.
Servant-Hearted. Are they leaders who serve? This is a high value for us because even Jesus came to serve. Do they anticipate the needs of others? Do they meet those needs without letting obstacles or excuses get in the way?
Teachable. One of the most important qualities of a biblical leader is their ability to receive instruction, correction, and reproof. How do they receive constructive criticism? Do they welcome it or do they become defensive?
Do you have someone in mind who may be a F.A.S.T. leader?
The How
1. Every one gets to facilitate
The key to leadership development is to start early—usually earlier than you think. That’s why the Gathering Guide ends with this question: Who will facilitate next time? As quickly as possible, start sharing leadership responsibility. This is the best way to raise leaders and discern who has leadership giftings.
The added benefit is that those who get to lead become better followers. That’s because as they experience leading (the responsibility and even the difficulty), they learn how to better support those leading.
Everyone gets to play!
2. Everyone Discipled / Everyone Discipling
The Way believes the following Leadership Sequence best ensures that we entrust The Faith to the next generation of faithful leaders who will also be able to teach others. Why?
Faithful Disciples First
Faithful Disciplers Second
Faithful Leaders Third
Repeat …
Use FOLLOW THE WAY to raise disciples AND disciplers.
Why is leadership formation more like a crockpot than a microwave?
3. Focus on one or two apprentices
For those who present as F.A.S.T. and gifted leaders start:
Training them using BE THE WAY and LEAD THE WAY.
Giving them manageable and controlled amounts of leadership away and see how people do. Don’t dump them into the leadership deep end. Let them test the water in the shallow end.
Use the MAWL pattern of leadership training:
MODEL
I Lead / You Watch / We Talk
ASSIST
(Part 1) I Lead / You Help / We Talk
(Part 2) You Lead / I Help / We Talk
WATCH
You Lead / I Watch / We Talk
LAUNCH or LEAVE
You Lead / We Keep Talking / I MAWL Someone New & Someday You Will Too
(The last step can either be LAUNCH or LEAVE, depending if you’re sending the new leader(s) to start a new MicroChurch or if you’re giving them the leadership of the MicroChurch they’re currently involved in.)
Only those who are given leadership responsibility can become responsible leaders.
Invite your apprentices to The Way’s monthly Leadership Community Zoom Calls for ongoing training and support as leaders.
Consult with a Network Leader on the readiness of your apprentice to move into leadership.
Commission the new leader, launch a new MicroChurch and continue to support these leaders and MicroChurch.
4. Start regular Collective Gatherings with the new leaders and MicroChurches
Launching new leaders and MicroChurches can be painful for you as a leader and for your MicroChurch. It’s hard to not see people you love on a weekly basis.
But what about seeing each every 6 weeks (or monthly)? What about getting together again with the new leaders and MicroChurches? What about all gathering together for Worship, Discovery, Community, and Mission? What about planning picnics and celebrating baptisms and going out on outreaches together and so on?
Collective Gatherings are important because:
They help us mitigate the pain of replication by helping us maintain important relationships.
They help us realize that we are part of something bigger than just our MicroChurch.
They help us foster even more replication of leaders and MicroChurches.
5. Attend the Network Gatherings as well
A couple of times a year, The Way Network will host fellowship, training, and outreach events.
Encourage all of your leaders and MicroChurch to participate.
YOUR NEXT LEADERSHIP STEP
What leadership questions do you have?
What is your next leadership move?
Are you ready to sign the Leadership Affirmation Statement?
LEADERSHIP STATEMENT OF AFFIRMATION
Follow The Way
1 Corinthians 11:1
Follow me as I follow Christ.
I am a follower of Jesus Christ and I am growing in my walk with Him.
Lead The Way
Matthew 16:18
I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
John 15:5
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
2 Timothy 2:1-2
You then, my child, be empowered by the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And what you heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will also be able to teach others.
1 Corinthians 15:10
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.
I acknowledge that the mission and the church doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to Jesus. So I will remain in Christ and rely on His grace to join Him in this ministry.
I have read The Vineyard Statement of Faith and agree to lead my MicroChurch within its biblical and theological teaching.
I have read The Way’s Theological Distinctives and agree to lead my MicroChurch within its biblical and theological teaching.
I welcome The Way’s leadership, training, support, supervision and accountability.
I am willing to get a background check and follow the Child and Youth Safety Policy.
I embrace The Way’s Priorities and Pathways and will lead my MicroChurch in pursuit of them:
